Work Produced at: Kait Carr Creative for Trillium Transit / Optibus

Objective: Redesign the RTC-Washoe website to be user-friendly and highly accessible to all. Create a new landing page experience for users that is rider-centered while still including the many other aspects of the transportation commission. Another goal was to bring consistency to the branding overall while modernizing the new websites’ aesthetic and layout.

Mobile First

I always use a mobile-first approach when designing websites, and with a large majority of RTC’s site visitors coming from a mobile device, it was especially important to prioritize the mobile experience for this, and all other public transportation projects.

Navigation Redesign

The original website had a side-bar menu/navigation in addition to a overly-complicated main navigation. Many menu options were repeated, some included visual indicators or icons, and the side-bar layout took up space that could instead be used for tools the user is primarily in need of.

Part of the solution that I proposed with the prototype to the right, was to eliminate the side-bar menu and condense both menus into one main navigation.

With the original site, the user was presented with a landing page and four sections of the website to choose from; public transportation, planning, construction, and about RTC, each section with it’s own color to identify it. The redesign includes brightened versions of the identifyiing colors, each color is used within the main navigation, and to identify which section of the site each subpage belongs.
